USA : AWU shows its support for US auto workers
AWU members joined with colleagues from other Australian unions at the V8 SuperCar event in Sydney this weekend in a show of support for Nissan workers in the United States.
The Australian unions distributed flyers outside the race to raise awareness of Nissan’s union-busting activities at Canton, Missisippi.
AWU National Secretary Paul Howes said Nissan was not giving workers in Mississippi the same rights and opportunities as its other employees around the world.
“We don’t have any concerns about Nissan entering into the SuperCars, in fact we welcome it.
“But we do have concerns about the way Nissan is treating its workers in Mississippi.”
Paul Howes said a Nissan Altima car would be also be joining the V8 SuperCar grid next year.
“The V8 SuperCar series is a celebration of Australian working class culture, and two of the most enduring values of Australian working class culture are fairness and respect.
“If Nissan wants to be accepted by Australian motor-racing fans then it should start giving its workers in Mississippi the respect they deserve.
“That means holding free and fair elections, without management interference, so that Nissan workers can choose how they want to be represented in the workplace.”
