Griffon download stats, take II
Back in June published some statistics regarding the plugin downloads form a central repository artifact Griffon. Interestingly, miglayout swingx-structuring and glazedlists seems to be locked in a fierce competition in which the top dog.
There were some other interesting statistics about the operating system, processor architecture and preferred JDK from developers worldwide who received plugins via the portal. A little more than 6 months have passed from the statistics collected. Let's see what we have today
The operating system
As reported by System. getProperty (name "os.")
Decided to group all Windows entries into a single bucket, shows that has grown 200% overall, while OSX rose around 80%. Clearly OSX and Windows have eaten nearly 20% of Linux.
Processor architecture
As reported by System. getProperty ("os." arch ")
Interestengly non-64 bit platforms got a smaller piece of the pie, while x86_64 increased approximately 70%.
JDK
Grouped by large/small
Looks like a little over JDK7 grew 200%, which is good news as public updates for JDK6 are scheduled to end by February 2013.
Version griffon
So far seems to Griffon 0.9.5 is the most popular version usd so far. But numbers can be deceiving. As explained back in OCT 23rd (Remember Amazon outage? Just beat Griffon developers), plugin download statistics are influenced by the local host cache. That is, if you already have the miglayout-1.0.0 in local cache then the next time I install this version will be attracted from there rather than from a central repository, so the download is not counted. Bottom line is don't count plugin installations every time one of them triggered by the build.
Some called for Griffon to be able to measure the size of the community better and have a better idea of how widespread is the use of, which is why the next version (1.2.0) includes a feature ' home phone ' (GRIFFON-570) which is completely opt-in. Ever this will track you as an individual, nor to use the data collected in harmful ways. With these data we should be able to calculate with better accuracy which features Griffon is most important for you, plugins that give you the most mileage, and more.
